A federal judge has granted preliminary approval to Bank of America’s $72.5 million settlement with survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The agreement resolves a lawsuit alleging the bank knowingly provided financial support and legitimacy to Epstein through its business dealings.

Settlement Details and Allegations

The lawsuit, filed in October, claimed Bank of America failed to comply with regulations requiring the filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) despite numerous red flags. Attorney Stacy Schneider emphasized that excessive cash withdrawals should have triggered SAR filings, given the known nature of Epstein’s activities.

Similar Settlements with Other Banks

Bank of America’s payout is the third of its kind, following settlements with other major financial institutions. In 2023, JP Morgan Chase settled for nearly $300 million and Deutsche Bank for $75 million, both without admitting wrongdoing. Deutsche Bank described taking Epstein as a client as a “critical mistake.”

Ongoing Investigations into Epstein's Finances

The settlements highlight continued scrutiny of financial institutions’ roles in Epstein’s activities and the infrastructure that enabled his crimes. A central focus of investigations remains the source of Epstein’s considerable wealth.

Lawmaker Concerns and Depositions

House Oversight Committee chair James Comer has expressed bewilderment regarding the origins of Epstein’s fortune. Lawmakers continue to investigate Epstein’s wealth, the financial institutions involved, and connected individuals. Last month, Richard Kahn, Epstein’s former accountant, was deposed as part of this effort.

Focus on Epstein's Support Network

Investigations are increasingly focused on the network surrounding Epstein. Representative Suhas Subramanyam noted that more information is emerging regarding this infrastructure, including the roles of financial institutions like Bank of America.

The settlements underscore the potential for financial institutions to be held accountable for their involvement, even indirectly. The ongoing investigations aim to understand the full extent of the support network that enabled Epstein’s alleged crimes and the complex financial connections surrounding him.
