Following the theatrical run of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which arrived in December, franchise executive producer Rae Sanchini has provided an encouraging update regarding the next installment, Avatar 4.

Avatar: Fire and Ash Home Release Context

Avatar: Fire and Ash continued the narrative of Jake Sully and his family, hitting theaters two years after the emotional conclusion of Avatar: The Way of Water. The film is now set for its home media debut, arriving on digital platforms on March 31.

Sanchini shared these insights during an interview with Tatiana Hullender for the home release promotion. The discussion coincided with questions about director James Cameron potentially starting work on his long-planned Fantastic Voyage adaptation this year.

The Urgency for Avatar 4 and 5 Production

Sanchini emphasized that work on both the fourth and fifth Avatar installments must commence "pretty soon." This urgency stems from the immense preparation and long lead time inherent in the production process for these massive films.

Regarding Cameron's other projects, Sanchini noted:

  • Fantastic Voyage has been a dream project in the works for some time and is moving forward in very early stages.
  • The Avatar films require a very long lead time process, necessitating an imminent start.
  • Cameron always has several other original ideas in development.

Cameron's Previous Stance and Release Schedule

Sanchini's comments follow a statement made by James Cameron earlier in March at the Saturn Awards. Cameron clarified the status of the sequels, though he remained cautiously optimistic.

Cameron stated: "To perfectly be clear, we haven't even made a decision to move forward. But should I do that – which I will say is likely, but not 100% – we will definitely learn from the lessons of all three films."

Despite any production uncertainties, Disney's updated release calendar still lists Avatar 4 for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 for 2031. Given the historically long pre-production, production, and post-production phases, hitting these dates remains a key challenge.

Reception of the Third Installment

Avatar: Fire and Ash achieved broad commercial success for Disney, grossing $1.485 billion globally ($404 million domestic and $1.081 billion overseas). This success supports Disney's desire to conclude the planned saga.

Critical reception for the third film was mixed, earning a 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews frequently praised the stunning visuals and exceptional action sequences, but some critics found the film too derivative of The Way of Water.

Audience reception proved significantly stronger, with the film holding a 90% score. This score is comparable to The Way of Water, which garnered a 92% audience score against a 76% critics' score.

Future Story Details

While specific plot details for Avatar 4 remain under wraps, it is known that a substantial portion of the first act has already been filmed. Furthermore, the fourth movie is anticipated to incorporate a significant time jump in its narrative structure.
