Austin FC is set to challenge Inter Miami CF this Saturday at the opening of Nu Stadium, Inter Miami’s new home venue. For the past 141 weeks, Major League Soccer has largely focused on South Florida, ever since Inter Miami CF signed Lionel Messi.
Messi's Impact on MLS
Since joining MLS, Messi has earned back-to-back MVP awards and led Inter Miami to win the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield, and the 2025 MLS Cup. He has become the central figure in the league.
First Meeting Since Messi's Arrival
Austin FC has largely avoided direct competition with Messi’s Miami until now. This weekend’s match will be the first encounter between the two teams since the Argentine legend joined Inter Miami, holding significant historical importance.
Nu Stadium's Debut
Saturday’s game also marks the official opening of Nu Stadium. After six seasons playing in a temporary stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Inter Miami has relocated to Miami proper and will inaugurate the new stadium against Austin FC.
Stadium Construction
Despite ongoing construction surrounding Miami Freedom Park and its proximity to Miami International Airport, the stadium will be operational. Coach Nico Estévez confirmed he received confirmation of the stadium’s readiness on March 21.
Stadium amenities will be basic, focusing on essential elements: seats, grass, concessions, lights, speakers, goals, and corner flags. The newly installed grass was grown on a farm near Palm Beach.
Austin FC's Strategy
Austin FC aims to minimize distractions and spoil Inter Miami’s celebratory atmosphere. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver stated the team is aware of Inter Miami’s strengths but also believes they have vulnerabilities.
Current Form
Inter Miami, the defending MLS Cup champions, has started the 2026 season strongly, with only one loss in five league matches, against LAFC. Austin FC recently held LAFC to a scoreless draw and will carry that confidence into the weekend.
Stuver emphasized the need for the entire Austin FC squad to perform at their best to succeed against Messi and Inter Miami.
