An 89-year-old man is in custody following a series of shootings in Athens that left five individuals injured. The suspect, a former garbage collector, reportedly targeted social security and court offices in a protest related to his denied pension claims.
Shooting at EFKA Social Security Office
The incident began at the EFKA social security office in the Kerameikos district. Security footage shows the suspect calmly approaching the building armed with a shotgun. He entered the office on the fourth floor and fired a shot, striking a worker in the leg after instructing a colleague to take cover.
Attack at Ambelokipi Court Building
After fleeing the EFKA office in a taxi, the suspect proceeded to a court building in the Ambelokipi district. He discharged his weapon into the floor of an office, injuring four female employees. He then left behind his shotgun and several envelopes containing documents intended to explain his actions.
Suspect's Arrest and Additional Weapon
Police launched a manhunt and apprehended the suspect at a hotel in Patra, approximately 130 miles west of Athens. During the arrest, officers discovered a .38 revolver in his possession.
Background and Motives
Local media reports indicate the suspect had previously received mental health treatment and had his shotgun license revoked in 2018 after leaving bullet casings outside a prosecutor’s office. He was initially denied a Greek pension in 2016, with his appeal rejected two years later.
Letter and Prior Statements
Investigators have reviewed a letter dated April 25, in which the suspect referenced a folder containing over 150 documents he intended to publish. He also reportedly told a taxi driver the day before the shootings, “You’ll see what I’ll do tomorrow,” suggesting premeditation related to his pension grievances.
Concerns Raised
The case has sparked discussion regarding mental health support and the efficiency of the Greek pension system. Authorities are continuing to investigate the suspect’s motives and background.
