The Artemis II mission, a crucial step in returning humans to the moon, encountered an unexpected issue shortly after its successful launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Wednesday.
Toilet Trouble in Deep Space
The four-person crew aboard the Orion spacecraft reported a malfunction with the high-tech toilet system not long after liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center. Astronaut Christina Koch, the only woman on the 10-day mission, initially alerted Mission Control to the problem.
Problem Identified and Resolved
NASA officials determined the issue stemmed from a controller problem with the toilet. Norm Knight, NASA’s director of flight operations, explained that ground teams worked to provide instructions for resolving the issue. While the system initially had trouble with urine disposal, the fecal collection function remained operational.
“The fecal collection of the toilet, that specific capability, can still be used with the waste management system aboard Orion,” stated a NASA official.
Restoring Functionality
Flight controllers quickly guided Koch through the necessary steps to restore the toilet to full functionality. Within hours, Mission Control confirmed the toilet was operational.
“Happy to report that toilet is go for use,” Capcom Amy Dill radioed to Koch. The crew was advised to allow the system to reach operating speed before and after use.
A Small Comfort in Space
The new toilet aboard the Orion spacecraft, nicknamed “Integrity,” was designed to provide astronauts with a degree of privacy during their lunar journey. Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian Space Agency astronaut, highlighted the importance of this feature in a pre-launch video tour.
“We’re pretty fortunate as a crew to have a toilet with a door on this tiny spacecraft… the one place we can go during the mission where we can actually feel like we’re alone for a moment,” Hansen said.
The toilet utilizes a hose for urine disposal and an industrial-looking seat for solid waste, which is collected in canisters for return to Earth after the mission concludes.
