Chicago Celebrates Artemis II Moon Mission Launch
Chicagoans came together on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, to witness a historic moment in space exploration: the launch of NASA’s Artemis II moon mission. The mission marks a significant milestone, sending astronauts around the moon for the first time in over half a century.
Watch Parties at Adler Planetarium and Beyond
The Adler Planetarium hosted a public watch party, drawing large crowds eager to experience the launch live. A separate event was also held in Oak Park at the Austin Gardens Environmental Education Center, organized by NASA Solar System Ambassador Mark Benson.
Enthusiasm and Excitement Among Attendees
Visitors expressed their excitement about the mission. “I think it’s cool. It’s been too long, so it’s nice that they’ll be back there, and hopefully we’ll keep exploring and keep on doing it,” said Stuart Mattison, an Adler Planetarium visitor. Maura York added, “We were walking up and we saw the line all the way down the road… We’re super excited.”
Expert Narration and Mission Details
The Adler Planetarium’s Senior Director of Public Programs, Michelle Nichols, provided real-time, expert narration during the launch event. Nichols highlighted the mission’s ambitious scope, stating, “They’re actually going to end up traveling almost 5000 miles past the moon, farther than we’ve ever been.”
A Step Towards a Permanent Lunar Presence
Mark Benson emphasized the importance of Artemis II as a step towards establishing a lasting human presence on the moon. “Before the moon was kind of like a target… Now the goal is to stay there and develop,” he explained. He also noted the unifying power of such events, stating, “You’re gonna turn on the news and see something exciting and hopeful.”
Looking Ahead
As the four-person crew embarked on their 10-day journey from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, space enthusiasts in Chicago reflected on the significance of the event. Ben Delery, another visitor to the Adler Planetarium, remarked, “It’s been a while… So it’s kind of awesome that they’re actually doing this.”
