NASA’s Artemis 2 mission encountered a minor setback when a malfunction was reported with the Orion spacecraft’s toilet system. The issue, initially reported during live mission commentary, involved a jammed fan within the toilet.

Initial Reports and Troubleshooting

“The toilet fan is reported to be jammed,” NASA spokesperson Gary Jordan announced. Ground teams immediately began developing instructions to address the problem and restore the toilet’s operation. It was determined the malfunction stemmed from a controller issue.

Limited Functionality

While the toilet was being repaired, astronauts could still use the system for solid waste disposal. However, the urine collection function was temporarily unavailable. “The fecal collection of the toilet, that specific capability, can still be used with the waste management system aboard Orion,” Jordan clarified.

Successful Repair and Contingency Measures

After several hours, flight controllers guided astronaut Christina Koch through a series of troubleshooting steps. The efforts proved successful. “Happy to report that toilet is go for use,” Mission Control’s Capcom Amy Dill radioed to Koch.

Dill advised Koch to allow the system to reach operating speed before use and to run it briefly afterward. Prior to the repair, one crewmember utilized a Collapsible Contingency Urinal (CCU), which needed to be emptied overboard.

A Modern Convenience

This incident highlights the advancements in space travel compared to the Apollo missions of the 1960s and 70s. Apollo astronauts relied on plastic bags for waste disposal. The Orion spacecraft features a dedicated “hygiene bay” – a private toilet built into the capsule floor.

Privacy and Design

“The one place that we can go on our mission where we can feel like we’re alone for a moment,” remarked Artemis 2 mission specialist Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency. The toilet utilizes foot restraints and airflow to manage waste effectively.

Artemis 2 Mission Overview

The Artemis 2 mission is a historic 10-day test flight sending astronauts on a journey around the moon. It marks the first crewed flight of both the Orion spacecraft and the Space Launch System rocket. This story was updated on April 2nd to reflect the successful repair of the toilet.
