Golf superstar Tiger Woods was arrested last week in Florida and subsequently charged with driving under the influence (DUI) following a single-vehicle collision. A recently unsealed arrest report provides specific details regarding the athlete's condition immediately after the incident.
Details from the Florida Arrest Report
The report indicates that following the car crash, which resulted in his Land Rover rolling onto its side, Woods exhibited several signs of impairment. Officers noted that the 50-year-old athlete was observed to be "sweating profusely" and his eyes appeared "bloodshot and glassy." Furthermore, his pupils were described as "extremely dilated" when he finally removed his sunglasses.
Timeline and Initial Observations
Authorities confirmed that Woods was taken into custody around 2 p.m. on Friday in the Jupiter area. Deputies responding to the scene reported that Woods seemed impaired while answering questions and attempting standardized sobriety evaluations.
One deputy specifically observed that while Woods seemed alert during the investigation, his "movement was lethargic and slow" when speaking to another officer. Woods initially kept his sunglasses on; upon being asked to remove them, the extent of his eye condition became apparent.
Sobriety Tests and Medication Disclosures
During questioning, Woods stated that he had not consumed any alcohol that day. However, he admitted to taking "a few" prescription medications. Officers later discovered two pills in his pants pocket, which were subsequently identified as the painkiller hydrocodone.
The report mentioned that Woods shared details regarding his normal prescription regimen with officers, though these specifics were redacted from the public affidavit.
Performance During Field Exercises
Woods consented to a battery of field sobriety tests, but the report states he did not complete all of them correctly. In one exercise requiring him to track a pen tip with his eyes, officers noted he struggled significantly.
- Woods was unable to maintain a still head during the eye test and required several instructions to keep it straight.
- In a coordination evaluation involving counting and specific hand movements, Woods failed to follow all directions accurately.
A responding deputy concluded in the report: "Based on my observations of Woods, how he performed the exercises and based on my training, knowledge, and experience, I believed that normal faculties were impaired, and he was unable to safely operate the motor vehicle."
Circumstances of the Collision
The affidavit detailed that Woods was driving behind a pickup truck towing a trailer. When the truck began slowing down to turn into a driveway, Woods allegedly swerved suddenly into the middle of the road.
Fortunately, no individuals sustained injuries in the collision. The towed trailer, however, incurred approximately $5,000 in damages. The truck driver informed a Martin County sheriff's deputy that he and another individual assisted Woods in exiting his SUV.
Because the driver's side door was facing the ground after the vehicle overturned, Woods was required to exit through the passenger side, according to the official documentation.
