Apple TV+ is bringing the intense thriller Cape Fear to the small screen with a brand-new series adaptation. The streaming service has just released the initial trailer, offering viewers a glimpse into the tone and style of the upcoming show.
A New Take on a Classic Thriller
This new streaming series is a modern reimagining of the gripping story previously adapted by Martin Scorsese in his 1991 film. That movie was itself based on the novel by John D. MacDonald.
The original 1991 film centered on Nick Nolte as an attorney whose family faced danger after he helped convict a man accused of statutory rape. Juliette Lewis and Robert De Niro received Oscar nominations for their roles in that adaptation.
Historical Adaptations of Cape Fear
The story has roots stretching back further, with a 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum. In the 1962 version, Sam Bowden testified against Max Cady for rape, leading to an eight-year sentence.
In the Scorsese film, Sam Bowden was the public defender who concealed evidence, resulting in his client's 14-year conviction for the crime. In every prior iteration, Max Cady seeks revenge upon his release from prison.
Key Changes in the Apple TV Series
The upcoming Apple TV series aims to align more closely with the original novel while introducing significant new elements. The trailer suggests a much darker narrative is in store for the audience.
A major departure is the characterization of Max Cady. While previous adaptations depicted him as a rapist and sex offender, the new series reveals him as a “notorious killer” whom Tom Bowden and his wife, Anna, helped imprison.
Both Tom and Anna are attorneys in this version, meaning Max holds a grudge against both of them. Making Max a killer from the start elevates the immediate danger, unlike earlier versions where his murderous nature developed later.
Star Power and Release Details
Oscar-winner Javier Bardem takes on the role of Max Cady. In the trailer, Bardem’s character states he once had a great life before the couple destroyed it for him.
A tense moment in the preview features Anna asking Tom, “Does Max know what we did?” This hints at a shared secret between the Bowdens regarding Cady’s conviction.
The new series is officially described as being “inspired” by Scorsese’s film, which explains the introduction of these narrative shifts. Amblin Television’s Steven Spielberg serves as the showrunner for the adaptation.
The cast also includes CCH Pounder, Ron Perlman, and Ted Levine. Viewers can catch the first two episodes on Apple TV+ on June 5. The 10-episode series will then release new installments every Friday, concluding with the finale on July 31.
