Apple has issued a security update for iOS 18 users, a move considered unusual by industry observers. The update, released on Wednesday, addresses critical security flaws affecting iPhones running older, yet compatible, software versions.
Addressing a Security Risk
Previously, iPhone users who deliberately avoided updating to iOS 26, despite having compatible hardware, were vulnerable to significant security risks. This created a “security donut hole,” leaving devices exposed to potential threats.
The DarkSword Exploit and Spyware
Users with unpatched older iOS versions could have had spyware installed simply by visiting a compromised website. This spyware could potentially access personal data and financial information, including cryptocurrency holdings.
Backporting Security Measures
While older iOS versions had received updates to protect against the DarkSword exploit, Apple’s latest action involves “backporting” security fixes. According to a report by Wired, an anonymous Apple spokesperson confirmed the update would be available Wednesday for users who haven't upgraded from iOS 18 to iOS 26.
This update extends protection to those who preferred to remain on older software, alongside anyone who simply hadn't upgraded. The release comes after a busy month for Apple, which also launched several new products alongside announcements from companies like Sonos, Nintendo, Asus ROG, and Ikea.
Recent Product Releases
Recent product announcements include the Samsung Bespoke AI Refrigerator and potential updates to the AirPods Max 2, which are expected to improve upon key features of wireless headphones.
