AOC Announces Opposition to Military Aid

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has announced she will oppose all future U.S. military aid to Israel. This represents a shift from her previous position of supporting Israel’s right to defend itself.

Pressure from the Left and DSA Meeting

Ocasio-Cortez’s decision came after being pressed by members of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America (DSA). During a meeting with DSA members, she was directly asked if she would commit to voting “no” on any spending for arms to Israel, including “defensive capabilities.”

Opposition to IHRA Definition of Antisemitism

During the same meeting, Ocasio-Cortez also stated she would oppose any attempts to codify the International Holocaust Remembrance Association (IHRA) definition of antisemitism into law. The IHRA defines antisemitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews.”

IHRA Definition Details

According to the IHRA, manifestations of antisemitism target Jewish individuals, property, and institutions. The organization’s definition includes denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, such as claiming the existence of Israel is a racist endeavor.

Justification for Policy Change

In a statement released on Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez argued that Israel is capable of funding its own defense systems. She specifically mentioned the Iron Dome system, stating the Israeli government is “well able to fund” it.

Ocasio-Cortez further explained she will not support sending “more taxpayer dollars and military aid to a government that consistently ignores international law and U.S. law.”

Broader Political Context

This development occurs as both the Democratic and Republican parties experience fringes moving towards anti-Israel positions. There has been a rise in controversial statements regarding Israel and Jewish people, with concerns about the spread of conspiracy theories.

Previously, Ocasio-Cortez had expressed support for Israel’s security alongside other House Democrats, stating, “We believe strongly in Israel’s right to self-defense and have joined colleagues previously in affirming our shared commitment.” She also affirmed support for strengthening the Iron Dome and ensuring a secure future for Israel.
