AMC is moving forward with its high-stakes NASCAR drama, Thunder Road, and has secured a prominent lead actor: Dennis Quaid.

'Thunder Road' Focuses on a NASCAR Family

The series will explore the multi-generational Whitlock family, deeply rooted in NASCAR culture and Southern heritage. Their story intertwines decades of stock car racing with their blue-collar identity.

A Racing Empire at Risk

Quaid will portray the family patriarch, a legendary driver who built a racing empire from humble beginnings tied to moonshine runs and dirt tracks. He now faces the challenge of preserving his legacy and his family’s position in the sport as the dynasty risks extinction.

First Scripted Drama Collaboration for NASCAR

Thunder Road represents a significant milestone for NASCAR, marking the organization’s first collaboration on a long-form scripted drama series. While previous films like Days of Thunder and docuseries have depicted the sport, this series aims for a more in-depth, character-driven narrative.

Dennis Quaid's Extensive Experience

The addition of Dennis Quaid is expected to bolster the show’s appeal. Quaid is known for his role in War Machine and has a career spanning decades, including an Independent Spirit Award for Far From Heaven and an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Bill Clinton in The Special Relationship.

John Fusco created the series, with Taylor Elmore serving as showrunner. Cliff Roberts, Mark L. Smith, NASCAR’s Tim Clark, and John Dahl are executive producers. Production is slated to begin this summer.
