Prog Rock Icon Christopher North of Ambrosia Passes Away at 75
Christopher North, a founding member of the celebrated progressive rock group Ambrosia, has died at the age of 75. The San Francisco native's passing was announced by the band, though the official cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
The band revealed that North had recently fought a "brave and successful battle with throat cancer." Even during his health struggles, the group noted that "his spirit remained tied to the music and the fans he loved."
A Fiery Stage Presence and Musical Legacy
North co-founded Ambrosia alongside David Pack, Joe Puerta, and Burleigh Drummond. The band fondly recalled his "fiery, ‘intense’ stage presence" throughout his career.
His musical journey began memorably, as the band stated he was discovered "playing in a dimly lit room, his organ topped with a bottle of wine." He initially departed the band in 1977 but later returned to contribute to major hits.
Key Contributions to Ambrosia Hits
North was instrumental in the band's later successes, working on fan favorites such as "Biggest Part of Me" and "You’re the Only Woman." The group celebrated him as "a true craftsman of the classic rock era."
They emphasized that his "lush piano lines and soaring organ swells will remain timeless." The band concluded their tribute by stating, "He was truly one of a kind, and loved dearly by his fans and bandmates."
Recent Health Challenges
In addition to his cancer fight, the band mentioned that North had faced another serious incident last year. In October, he was struck by a car while walking to a local restaurant.
