A Legacy Continues at UC Berkeley
The renowned Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre is set to return to the UC Berkeley campus for its annual mini-residency from April 7-12. Presented by Cal Performances, the engagement will feature several programs, including the company’s signature work, Revelations.
This year’s residency marks a significant chapter for the troupe, as it is led by new artistic director Alicia Graf Mack. Mack is only the fourth person to hold this position in the company's nearly 70-year history, following in the footsteps of founder Alvin Ailey, Judith Jamison, and Robert Battle.
Honoring the Past While Embracing Innovation
Since Alvin Ailey founded the company in 1958, leadership has focused on expanding the repertoire while highlighting African-American history and culture. Mack, who previously served as the Dean and Director of the Dance Division at The Juilliard School, aims to uphold this vision.
The upcoming residency features four distinct programs, including:
- Six Bay Area premieres.
- A reimagined solo performance.
- An entirely new ensemble work.
- The return of the beloved classic, Revelations.
Alicia Graf Mack: A Visionary Leader
Mack’s connection to the company runs deep. She performed as a principal dancer with the Ailey troupe for eight seasons between 2005 and 2014, having been invited to join by the late Judith Jamison. Mack credits Jamison as her "North Star" and a vital mentor throughout her career.
Reflecting on her journey, Mack emphasizes the importance of her background and the influence of her mother. Born in San Jose and raised in Maryland, she views her role as an ambassador for her culture and the dance field. "My presence onstage is more than being a great dancer; it’s representing something larger than myself," she stated.
Curating for the Future
In collaboration with associate artistic director Mathew Rushing, Mack has curated a season that balances technical virtuosity with storytelling. She highlights Medhi Walerski’s Blink of an Eye and the new work Jazz Island as key examples of the company’s push toward new artistic frontiers.
Mack expressed excitement about returning to Zellerbach Hall, noting the importance of both the evening performances and the daytime shows for local students. For the new director, the residency is a homecoming that celebrates the enduring spirit of the organization.
