Amazon has introduced a significant upgrade to its AI-powered assistant, enabling users to order food from Grubhub and Uber Eats through natural conversation. This new feature aims to eliminate the awkward, rigid exchanges often associated with voice ordering.
The Shift to Conversational Commerce with Alexa Plus
The core of this update is making the ordering process feel like speaking with a server in a restaurant. Users can now modify items, add drinks, or change their order mid-conversation without waiting for Alexa to complete its previous response.
According to Amazon, the assistant will only intervene when assistance or clarification is required. "For years, voice assistants have operated on a call-and-response model: you ask, it answers," Amazon stated in a press release.
A New Interaction Model
The company explained that when an order begins, a new conversational window appears. This allows users to "naturally explore, decide, and order with minimal back-and-forth with Alexa." This enhancement is part of Amazon’s larger strategy following the launch of Alexa Plus last year, which utilizes generative AI.
Availability and Setup for Food Ordering
This conversational ordering capability is currently rolling out to subscribers of Alexa Plus. The feature is specifically available on Echo Show 8 devices and larger models, which display order changes in real time.
Amazon has not yet provided a specific timeline for wider rollout to other gadgets. To begin using the service, users must first connect their Grubhub or Uber Eats accounts within the Alexa app.
Accessing and Managing Orders
The connection process involves navigating to More > Alexa+ Store > Food & Reservations in the app. Once linked, saved restaurants and previous orders automatically sync with Alexa.
Users can search by restaurant name or cuisine, reorder past meals, or start completely new requests. For example, users can ask Alexa to "show me desserts" or request "kid-friendly suggestions." A summary of the cart is displayed before final purchase.
Order tracking updates are provided in the "For You" section, or users can simply ask Alexa for the status of their delivery.
Future Vision for Alexa’s Capabilities
Amazon views this development as merely the beginning of its long-term vision for customer interaction. The company has heavily invested in rebuilding Alexa from a traditional command-and-control system into the AI-powered Alexa Plus.
This transformation aims to create an assistant that understands natural language and adapts to user needs, helping Amazon maintain relevance in the competitive AI assistant market. Amazon confirmed plans to expand this conversational experience to cover areas like grocery shopping and travel planning in the future.
