The Alabama Crimson Tide is actively rebuilding its defensive front this spring after losing significant talent to the NFL and the transfer portal. Key departures include LT Overton and Tim Keenan III heading to the professional ranks, alongside Keon Keeley, James Smith, Qua Russaw, and Kelby Collins who entered the portal.
New Faces Making an Immediate Impact
To fill these voids, Coach Kalen DeBoer's staff utilized the transfer portal effectively. Junior running back Daniel Hill, who faces the new defensive unit daily, highlighted two transfers as the most surprising performers.
Standout Transfer Portal Additions
- Devan Thompkins (USC): Thompkins, a transfer from USC, impressed Hill. Last season with the Trojans, he accumulated 31 total tackles, registering three sacks and forcing one fumble.
- Desmond Umeozulu (South Carolina): Hill also praised Umeozulu, calling him a "great player." Umeozulu played in 36 games across three seasons at South Carolina, recording 30 total tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss.
Another notable addition is the 6-foot-5, 319-pound defensive lineman Terrance Green, who transferred from Oregon.
Coaching Staff's Vision for the Defensive Line
The coaching staff anticipates these additions will significantly improve the unit's ability to control the line of scrimmage. The goal is to generate pressure without constantly relying on blitzes.
The focus is on stopping the run effectively using the defensive front four, supported by the linebackers. The coach noted that last year, edge run defense was a primary struggle, with opponents often running successfully up the middle.
"Our system lends to making sure balls don't get out there very often in the run game," the coach stated. He added that the new personnel will allow the defense to play more base defense effectively. While acknowledging there is still work to do, the direction is positive.
Returning Talent and Overall Competitiveness
Despite the losses, Alabama retains key contributors from last season's front seven. Yhonzae Pierre returns as the team's sacks leader.
Defensive lineman London Simmons is also back after playing in all 15 games as a true freshman. Jeremiah Beaman and Edric Hill provide further depth to the returning group.
Safety Keon Sabb expressed confidence in the unit's competitive spirit, noting the infusion of new talent. Sabb stated, "We’ve got some guys that are dogs... I feel like through the transfer portal and the younger guys, I think we found that" level of competition required at Alabama.
