AISD Considers Future of Closing Campuses
Ten Austin ISD campuses are set to close at the end of the current school year. Among these, six – Ridgetop, Becker, Dawson, Widén, Sunset Valley elementaries, and land surrounding Bedichek Middle School – are under consideration for future lease or sale.
Community Concerns Voiced at Ridgetop Open House
On March 24th, Austin ISD hosted a community open house at Ridgetop Elementary to gather feedback on potential future uses for the property. Residents expressed concerns about the impact of potential development on the neighborhood.
Neighborhood Impact
Lindsey Kucharski, a 14-year resident of the Hyde Park-North Loop area, shares the concerns of her neighbors. She emphasized the importance of maintaining the community’s character. “To have a massive complex here would destroy where we have chosen to live… It would be devastating,” Kucharski stated.
Potential Options for Campus Properties
AISD is exploring several options for the surplus properties. These include permanent sale, long-term ground leases (often involving demolition), leases of 20-50 years allowing tenant renovations, and short-term leases for nonprofits or community partners.
City Council Involvement
On March 26th, the Austin City Council signaled its intent to collaborate with AISD by May 28th. The goal is to ensure the land use aligns with “the public’s interest” as AISD plans revenue-generating property sales.
Surplus Property Designation
The designation of these campuses as surplus property indicates AISD has determined they are not needed for district use within the next 20 years. This determination stems from the trustees’ November vote to close the schools.
Revenue Generation
Jaime Miller, senior executive director of facilities and operations at AISD, explained that revenue generated from these “real estate opportunities” is not subject to recapture. AISD anticipates generating $19.7 million from these sales. Miller also noted that lease partnerships could allow for continued educational use of the properties.
