Air Jordan 1 Low Receives 'Banned' Treatment
The Air Jordan 1 Low will soon be available with the distinctive “Banned” design, mirroring the high-top version released in 2011. This marks the first time the iconic treatment has been applied to the low-top silhouette.
Referencing the 'Banned' Myth
The sneaker, often referred to as “black and red,” leans into the popular story surrounding the original Air Jordan 1. The design includes details referencing the NBA’s alleged prohibition of the black and red colorway.
Insole and Tongue Details
The insoles feature the text: “On September 25th, Nike created a revolutionary basketball shoe. On October 18th, 1984, they were thrown out of the game.” The inner-tongue tags display the phrase “Imagine if…?” a callback to a previous release.
The History Behind the 'Banned' Narrative
Despite the popular belief, the NBA’s warning regarding uniform regulations actually predated Michael Jordan wearing the Air Jordan 1 in a game. Jordan was initially cited for wearing similarly colored Nike Air Ships on October 18th. He debuted the Air Jordan 1 in the “Chicago” colorway on November 17th.
Initial 'Banned' Release
Nike first released the high-top Air Jordan 1 “Banned” in 2011 through outlet stores with limited notice. Sneaker enthusiasts often use “Banned” and “Bred” interchangeably, but this release specifically refers to the design with the added “X.”
Release Details
The Air Jordan 1 Low “Banned” will be released on May 16th via the Snkrs app and select retailers. The retail price is set at $145.
