The Neurological Basis of Emotional Dysregulation
According to Dr. Brown, working memory impairments common in ADHD can allow a momentary emotion to become overwhelming, essentially “flooding the brain.” This intense emotional response can overshadow other important information, hindering the ability to regulate behavior. This can manifest as heightened anger, frustration, or hurt feelings.

Individuals with untreated ADHD often struggle to sustain effort for tasks with delayed rewards, preferring activities offering immediate gratification. Brain imaging studies suggest fewer receptor sites for reward-related chemicals in people with ADHD.
The Role of Working Memory
Working memory is crucial for emotional regulation, helping us organize thoughts, maintain focus, and self-regulate. Impaired working memory in ADHD can contribute to disorganization, irritability, and procrastination. It can also either amplify emotions or diminish sensitivity to their importance.

Addressing the emotional challenges of ADHD requires a comprehensive approach. This includes accurate diagnosis, recognizing the impact of ADHD on emotions.
