Aaron Glenn expressed confidence that the competitive edge carried by quarterback Geno Smith will propel the New York Jets' offense forward in 2026. This belief comes after the Jets secured Smith via a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, following their failure to acquire the top draft pick, consensus Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, who is projected to join the Raiders.

The Reunion: Bringing Back a Former Jet

The Jets opted to reunite with Smith, whom they originally selected in the second round out of West Virginia over a decade ago, after his initial tenure with the team proved difficult. Glenn detailed the team's careful selection process, stating, “We wanted to make sure we took our time. It’s like, ‘What guy actually fits the Jets?’”

Glenn highlighted Smith's character traits as key assets for the team culture. He noted that Smith possesses a significant "chip on his shoulder" and is highly competitive. Furthermore, Glenn emphasized Smith's growth, stating the quarterback has learned from early career mistakes and now understands his role as a crucial locker room leader.

Geno Smith's Career Trajectory

Smith's first stint with the Jets was challenging. During his rookie year, he managed only 12 touchdowns against 21 interceptions. The following season, he threw for 2,525 yards across 14 games, finishing with a 12-18 record as the starter.

Following brief stops with the Giants and Chargers, Smith found significant success with the Seattle Seahawks. Across three seasons there, he averaged 4,075 passing yards annually, throwing for 23 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions per year, earning two Pro Bowl selections.

His peak performance came in 2022 when he led the NFL with a 69.8% completion rate, accumulating 4,282 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. This performance earned him the Comeback Player of the Year award and a ninth-place finish in MVP voting.

However, his recent tenure with the Raiders proved difficult. Smith threw for 3,025 yards with 19 touchdowns but also recorded a league-worst 17 interceptions, leading to his release earlier this month.

Despite the previous struggles, the Jets view Smith as an upgrade over the "shambolic situation" at quarterback last year, which included the unsuccessful Justin Fields experiment. Glenn is eager to see Smith operate behind the current offensive line.

Glenn predicts Smith will "create some damage" due to his exceptional arm talent. He also pointed to Smith's marked improvement in football intelligence, including identifying defensive schemes and understanding protection assignments. Glenn recalled observing Smith "controlling everything" during his time in Seattle.
