YouTube has become a significant launchpad for emerging horror talent, evidenced by successes like Danny and Michael Philippou's Talk to Me and Markiplier's recent Iron Lung adaptation. Many creators, however, have built massive followings purely through direct uploads to the platform.
This group includes creators such as Remy Abode with Gemini Home Entertainment and Alex Kister with The Mandela Catalogue. Dylan Clark's short, Portrait of God, is also being developed into a feature film with producer backing from Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele.
The Phenomenon of Kane Pixels' Backrooms
One of the most significant online horror success stories belongs to Kane Pixels, the moniker for creator Kane Parsons. His Backrooms web series is based on the original creepypasta and accompanying image.
The series launched in 2022, with the inaugural episode alone garnering over 73 million views on YouTube. This first installment kicked off a larger collection of 22 short films exploring the titular complex, which exists just outside conventional reality.
Async's Descent into the Labyrinth
The narrative of the shorts primarily follows the organization Async as its members attempt to study the Backrooms. They document the various anomalies within the shifting structure while more individuals vanish inside its labyrinthine halls.
In just under two months, this digital sensation will transition to the big screen, directed by Parsons himself. A24 recently released a harrowing new trailer to preview the highly anticipated project.
A Glimpse into A24's Adaptation
Until now, A24’s feature adaptation has been kept largely under wraps. The official synopsis only hinted that the plot begins after "a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom."
The initial teaser offered only glimpses of the complex’s increasingly surreal, liminal layers. It showed the endless, shifting halls characterized by yellow walls and the incessant buzzing of fluorescent lights.
This latest footage, however, finally reveals the profound horror awaiting those who "no-clip" through the boundaries of reality. The trailer showcases the sheer terror of this inexplicable, titanic facility, filled with threats beyond human comprehension.
Assembling a Horror A-Team
For his feature directorial debut, Parsons collaborated with established genre veterans. James Wan's Atomic Monster banner serves as a producer on the film, alongside Chernin Entertainment and Shawn Levy's 21 Laps Entertainment.
The screenplay was penned by Ash vs. Evil Dead writer Will Soodik. The film stars Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, supported by Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and Avan Jogia.
Mark Duplass Praises Young Director
Despite being the youngest director in A24 history, Parsons earned the full confidence of his cast. Mark Duplass, in a previous interview with Perri Nemiroff for The Creep Tapes, expressed admiration for Parsons' command.
Duplass noted his initial intent was to mentor the young filmmaker, stating, "Kane is 19 and he’s directing a huge studio movie for the first time. It’d probably be good to have Mark around." However, Duplass quickly realized Parsons was fully in control.
"He was so patient and good with the actors, with us. It was so impressive to watch him command that set in a lovely and humble way," Duplass remarked. The film is scheduled for release on May 29, 2026.
