Superman's power set has evolved significantly since his debut. Initially possessing strength, invulnerability, and limited senses, he rapidly gained abilities like X-ray vision and shapeshifting, especially during the Silver Age.
Over time, his capabilities were streamlined to focus on his most iconic powers. However, even with these modern limitations, Clark Kent still possesses a much broader range of abilities than most fans realize, which he technically retains.
Lesser-Known Powers Still Available to the Man of Steel
While flight, strength, and standard vision powers are consistent, Superman has accumulated numerous other skills throughout his long history. These powers may not appear frequently in modern narratives, but they remain part of his theoretical capabilities.
1. The Devastating Solar Flare
The Solar Flare was introduced as a significant new power following the New 52 reboot. Superman can release all his stored solar energy in a massive, explosive burst of flame and force, making it one of his most potent attacks.
This ability comes at a high cost: it completely depletes his reserves, leaving him as vulnerable as an ordinary human for a full day. Although it was central to a major storyline that revealed his identity, the power has rarely been utilized since, though it reappeared when Jon Kent manifested it eight years ago in the "Super Sons of Tomorrow" arc.
2. The Invisible Psychic Aura
Superman's renowned strength and invulnerability are actually supported by an invisible psychic field he constantly projects. This energy field protects his clothing from tearing and extends to anything he touches, enabling him to lift massive structures without causing stress fractures.
This concept was first established during John Byrne's run. Since the current continuity technically stems from that version, this aura remains active unless explicitly negated, functioning similarly to a basic form of tactile telekinesis.
3. Electromagnetic Eye Emissions
Beyond heat vision and telescopic sight, Superman possesses the ability to emit pure radiation, specifically microwaves, from his eyes. He demonstrated this power in issue #2 when he disabled electronic devices while being interrogated by the army.
This suggests he can project various electromagnetic wavelengths, aligning with his X-ray vision capabilities. It raises questions about whether he could emit radio waves, as he once manipulated police scanners in issue #22.
4. Molecular Vibration and Phasing
While often manifesting as fine motor control or shapeshifting, Superman can sometimes vibrate his molecules at specific frequencies to pass directly through solid matter. This power is more commonly associated with The Flash.
Phasing is rarely used by Superman because it seems redundant given his extreme durability and ability to simply smash through obstacles. Its absence in combat often serves to maintain narrative tension.
5. Absorption of All Energy Types
Superman's primary power source is solar radiation, but he functions as an absorber for nearly all forms of energy. He has demonstrated the capacity to intentionally absorb different radiation types and is instinctively unable to avoid absorbing certain energies.
He has amplified his strength using energy from the Genesis Fragment and absorbed power from figures like Starman and the Totality. Furthermore, he once absorbed the radiation from a nuclear explosion in issue #7, leaving him weakened but proving his universal energy intake.
6. Sight Beyond the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Superman's vision extends beyond standard sight, hearing, and smell. He can perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum and even see into other dimensions, viewing phenomena incomprehensible to ordinary humans.
The peak of this ability is his capacity to see the life aura of any being. This allows him to definitively perceive whether something is alive or dead, a realization that he finds deeply unsettling.
7. Super Voice Weaponization
Perhaps the most overlooked power is his super voice. Superman can mimic virtually any sound and amplify it to levels surpassing industrial sirens. He can weaponize this ability by shouting with such force that it causes physical destruction around him.
This functions as a much more powerful, though less focused, version of Black Canary's Canary Cry. If fully mastered, this vocal ability could grant him an extensive arsenal of sonic attacks.
