'I'm just glad everybody's safe': Several families displaced after fire in Akron Digital content producer at News 5 A fire in Akron left multiple families without homes over the weekend, according to the Akron Fire Department.Around 7:45 p.m. on Saturday, Sasha King, who lives in a unit on Ina Ct., was in her home with her two daughters and 8-month-old granddaughter when they heard a commotion outside and realized the building was on fire. 'Next thing we know, they're like, 'Get out! The whole roof is on fire,'' King said. 'So, as we come out, and then we look back and see, like, everything is on fire and spreading.'Crews responded just before 8 p.m., and Akron Fire said the flames could be seen from the first floor. On Monday, we learned that the fire started in an end unit, two over from King and her family, and continued to spread.'If you look at the buildings, it looks pretty significant because they are connected, all four of them were involved, so it's pretty significant damage,' said Akron Fire public information officer Tawanna Young. After the fire was knocked down, smoke remained stubborn in the building's attic.'My daughter was crying, like, 'Mom, we gonna lose everything.' But I'm like, 'We OK as long as we got each other. We can get all that back. That's nothing to build that back up. I'm just glad everybody's safe,'' King said. Some windows are now boarded up at the building, and while from the outside it may not look like there is much devastation, King said her unit faced heavy smoke and water damage, causing her to lose most of her belongings.Crews spent Monday collecting charred items from the units, including clothing and mattresses, and hauling them away in a truck. The Red Cross is helping 13 people from three families affected by the fire, providing them with food, clothing and shelter. The fact that no one was injured from the fast-moving fire is a relief.'One of the best outcomes that we can is that we do have people that are alive and walking around with us, so again, being able to see the families come out of those homes with no reported injuries is the best way to go for us,' Young said.King and her family are now staying in a hotel for a few nights. She said that dealing with the aftermath is hard, and she's unsure where she and her family go from here.'Life-changing, all of a sudden,' King said. 'One day, you got everything, next thing, it's all gone.'The cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
