Subaru Introduces First Hybrid Wilderness Model

At the New York International Auto Show, Subaru debuted the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid, marking the brand’s first foray into a hybrid Wilderness variant. This new model combines the rugged, trail-ready features of the Forester Wilderness with the efficiency of a hybrid powertrain.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid utilizes a 2.5-liter flat-four engine paired with two electric motors and a CVT automatic transmission, producing a total of 194 horsepower. This represents an increase of 14 hp over the standard, non-hybrid Forester Wilderness. All-wheel drive remains standard.

Fuel Efficiency and Range

Subaru estimates a 25% improvement in fuel economy, with projected figures of 34 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. The hybrid powertrain is expected to deliver a driving range exceeding 500 miles on a full tank.

Off-Road Capability

The Hybrid Wilderness inherits the robust trail-oriented hardware from the standard Forester Wilderness. This includes longer coil springs, tuned shock absorbers, and 17-inch matte-black wheels fitted with Yokohama Geolandar all-terrain tires.

Enhanced Ground Clearance and Angles

These features contribute to a ground clearance of 9.3 inches, matching the non-hybrid model. The approach, departure, and breakover angles are 23.5, 25.5, and 20.6 degrees, respectively. Aluminum underbody skidplates provide added protection.

Design and Interior

Visually, the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid is largely similar to its gasoline counterpart, distinguished by subtle “Hybrid” badging. It features gold-hued accents on the bumpers and roof rails, along with extended black body cladding and a matte black hood appliqué.

Interior Features

The interior mirrors the standard Forester Wilderness, with gold detailing and durable, water-repellent upholstery. An 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen is standard, running Subaru’s existing user interface. An optional package adds a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, an 11-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, and a power tailgate.

Pricing and Availability

Considering the approximately $1,700 price increase when adding the hybrid powertrain to other Forester trims, the 2027 Subaru Forester Wilderness Hybrid is expected to start around $44,000. This positions it competitively within the growing segment of electrified off-road SUVs.

Subaru believes the hybrid powertrain is a significant upgrade, particularly compared to the standard Forester Wilderness’s engine. The 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid is set to expand Subaru’s hybrid lineup and appeal to drivers seeking both adventure and efficiency.
