North Philadelphia Drug Ring Dismantled
Seventeen people have been arrested and charged in connection with a large-scale drug trafficking organization operating in North Philadelphia. The arrests are the result of ‘Operation Cocaine and Coffee,’ a collaborative effort between state and local law enforcement.
Key Figures and Charges
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday, along with the Pennsylvania State Police and Philadelphia Police, announced the arrests on Wednesday. Louis Alexander, 56, identified as the alleged leader of the Louis Alexander Drug Trafficking Organization, was among those taken into custody.
The suspects face multiple felony charges, including corruption, drug possession, and weapons offenses. Attorney General Sunday stated, “Today marks a new day for North Philadelphians who were, for far too long, exposed to a group of criminals who did not hesitate to carry firearms to protect their lucrative trade — distributing poisons.”
Investigation and Seized Evidence
Authorities served warrants at 30 locations across Philadelphia, Delaware County, and New Jersey last week, with the majority of locations in North Philadelphia. The investigation is ongoing, with officials believing the group was involved in violent crimes in addition to drug trafficking.
Evidence Recovered
- More than four pounds of cocaine
- 130 pounds of marijuana
- Crack cocaine
- Fentanyl
- Ecstasy pills
- Cash
- 27 firearms
Coffee Shop as a Front
A storefront, Cumberland Coffee & Snacks, located at the corner of West Cumberland and North Cleveland Streets, played a central role in the operation. Authorities allege the coffee shop was used as a “front” by Alexander and his associates.
Cumberland Coffee & Snacks allegedly served as a location for drug sales, with cocaine being cooked and packaged on the premises. Drugs were also reportedly sold directly on the street.
Legal Proceedings
All suspects have been arraigned, with bail set at varying amounts. Louis Alexander is currently incarcerated on $750,000 bail. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the cases.
