Following the sudden cancellation of numerous flights, Spirit Airlines passengers are receiving assistance from other major carriers. United, American, JetBlue, and Frontier Airlines are offering capped fares and support to those impacted by the disruptions, as well as to Spirit employees.
United Airlines' Assistance Program
United Airlines has launched a special program to aid passengers affected by the Spirit Airlines cancellations. For the next two weeks, travelers with canceled Spirit tickets can access discounted fares on United’s website – united.com/specialfares – for one-way travel from cities previously served by Spirit.
Fare Details and Requirements
Most fares are capped at $199, with longer-distance flights priced at a maximum of $299. To take advantage of this offer, travelers must submit their Spirit Airlines confirmation number, proof of purchase for travel dates between May 2nd and May 16th, and their United MileagePlus number. Enrollment in the United MileagePlus program is free.
Support for Spirit Employees
United Airlines is also extending support to Spirit employees impacted by the job losses. For the next two weeks, United is offering pass travel benefits, allowing Spirit employees to return home safely through the ID90 portal.
Furthermore, United is encouraging Spirit employees to apply for open positions within their company, offering a potential pathway to continued employment.
Other Airlines Join the Effort
American Airlines has implemented similar fare caps on overlapping routes and is encouraging displaced Spirit employees to apply for roles within their organization. JetBlue is offering $99 one-way fares for travelers with proof of a valid Spirit itinerary, valid for travel through May 6, 2026. Customers can contact JetBlue at 1-800-JETBLUE to discuss their options.
Frontier Airlines has also announced its readiness to assist impacted customers with low-fare alternatives.
Spirit Airlines' Refund Policy
Spirit Airlines has assured customers who booked with credit or debit cards that they will receive automatic refunds for any canceled flights. While Spirit is unable to directly rebook passengers on other airlines, the refund process is being streamlined.
This collaborative response from multiple airlines aims to mitigate the negative consequences of Spirit’s operational halt and provide stability for affected travelers and employees. The situation remains fluid, but the initial response demonstrates a concerted effort to address the challenges.
