A scuba diving instructor in Egypt is accused of inappropriate touching during a lesson with a holidaymaker, prompting outrage and demands for improved safety protocols within the industry.
Incident During Scuba Course
Rasha Mediene, a 31-year-old content creator and lifeguard from Los Angeles, California, experienced a disturbing incident while participating in a Euro 350 scuba diving course on March 1st. Despite informing the instructor of her Muslim faith and observance of Ramadan, she alleges he engaged in inappropriate physical contact while underwater.
Escalating Contact Underwater
Mediene was documenting her dive with a camera when she initially noticed the instructor holding her hand, which she initially considered a normal part of the lesson. However, the situation escalated when she felt him touch her bottom and leg, causing her significant discomfort and alarm.
She attempted to move away, but the instructor repeatedly grasped her legs, seemingly hindering her movement. Mediene felt particularly vulnerable due to her unfamiliarity with the scuba equipment and being alone with the instructor underwater.
Aftermath and Denial
After surfacing, the instructor allegedly attempted to impress Mediene, offering her a ride and boasting about his car. She declined and returned to her hotel to review her camera footage, which confirmed her suspicions.
The instructor contacted Mediene after the video went viral on social media, denying any wrongdoing. Mediene strongly disputes his claims, stating she displayed no signs of flirtation and was shocked by his actions.
Call for Increased Safety
The footage, which has garnered over three million views, clearly shows the instructor’s actions, raising serious concerns about safety and professional conduct. Mediene is now advocating for women to thoroughly research instructors and, when possible, choose female instructors.
She emphasized the power imbalance and the feeling of helplessness she experienced, noting that being underwater limited her ability to react. The incident highlights the need for a safe and respectful environment in water sports and accountability for those who abuse their authority.
