David Eggert, a 48-year-old pilot from Dusseldorf, has won a legal battle against his tour operator after his family's holiday to Kos was marred by a sunbed dispute. Eggert, who paid over €6,200 for a 10-night stay at the five-star Grecotel Kos Imperial resort, was awarded €900 in compensation for the inconvenience caused by towel-reserving tourists.
Sunbed Struggles at Greek Resort
Eggert claimed that every morning, guests at the resort would reserve sunbeds by placing towels on them early in the morning, only to leave them unused for hours. Despite signs prohibiting this practice, Eggert found that all 400 sunbeds were already taken by the time he and his family arrived at the pool.
Impact on Family Holiday
As a result, Eggert's children were forced to lie on the concrete poolside while empty loungers remained unused. Eggert, who got up early each morning to try and secure a spot, was unsuccessful in his attempts.
Legal Victory Against Tour Operator
Eggert took legal action against his tour operator, arguing that the resort's failure to enforce its own rules had ruined his family's holiday. This month, he was awarded €900 in compensation, a victory he hopes will highlight the issue of towel-reserving tourists.
Criticism of Selfish Tourists
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Eggert criticized the selfish behavior of tourists who reserve sunbeds with towels and then disappear for hours. He hopes his case will raise awareness of the issue and encourage resorts to enforce their rules more strictly.
