The City of Sault Ste. Marie is set to transform its local transit system with the launch of a new network known as 'Sault Loops'. Scheduled to begin on June 7, the redesign aims to enhance stop frequency, reliability, and the overall experience for commuters.

New Route Structure and Connectivity

The revamped network introduces four distinct routes designed to streamline travel across the city. These new routes include:

  • Citywide
  • Westside
  • Hillside
  • Eastside
  • Brent Lamming, the city's deputy CAO for community development and enterprise services, noted that the updated network will improve efficiency. "The updated network will allow riders to transfer more easily between routes, reducing travel times and minimizing the need for frequent downtown connections," Lamming stated.

    Service Adjustments and Continuity

While the new routes offer improvements, certain service changes are being implemented. The city will discontinue on-demand weekend evening service, replacing it with an hourly fixed-route service.

However, residents will see no changes to the existing Community Bus service, which will continue to operate as usual.

    Driven by Community Input

The transition to the 'Sault Loops' system follows an extensive Transit Optimization Study. This study utilized detailed analysis and community feedback to shape the new transit landscape.

The timing of the rollout comes just ahead of the upcoming municipal election this fall, a period that may see significant reactions from local voters regarding the changes.
