A British YouTuber has been ordered to pay substantial damages after being found liable for libel and harassment related to unfounded claims about the tragic 2018 murders of Shanann Watts and her daughters.

Alan Vinnicombe was ordered to pay £40,000 in damages following a libel suit brought by Franklin Rzucek, the brother of Shanann Watts. Shanann Watts, along with her daughters Bella and Celeste, were murdered in Colorado in 2018.

‘Armchair Detective Blue’ and the Claims

The case centered on Vinnicombe’s YouTube channel, ‘Armchair Detective Blue,’ where he propagated “wholly unfounded conspiracy theories” implicating Mr. Rzucek in a supposed cover-up surrounding the murders. The channel had over 79,000 followers before its closure in 2023 and featured 184 videos on the Watts case, as well as other high-profile cases like the disappearance of Nicola Bulley.

High Court Ruling

The High Court in London ruled in Mr. Rzucek’s favor without a trial in February. Deputy High Court Judge Dan Squires KC awarded the £40,000 in damages and issued an injunction preventing Vinnicombe from repeating the defamatory allegations.

The original murders were committed by Shanann Watts’ husband, Chris Watts, who strangled his pregnant wife and disposed of his daughters’ bodies in oil tanks. Chris Watts is currently serving five consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
