United Airlines is launching a new feature in its mobile application to provide passengers with estimated Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security wait times. This initiative aims to help travelers navigate airport congestion, which has been exacerbated by the partial Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown.

Pilot Program at Key Hubs

The feature will initially be available in a pilot program at several of United’s busiest U.S. hub airports, including Chicago O'Hare International Airport, Denver International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport. Expansion to additional airports will depend on the pilot program’s success.

DHS Shutdown Impacting Travel

The ongoing partial shutdown of the DHS has disrupted airport operations, leading to longer security lines and unpredictable wait times. The TSA is also experiencing staffing shortages, with absenteeism occasionally exceeding 10%, further worsening delays at security checkpoints.

Feature Details & App Integration

Within the 'Travel' section of the United mobile app, users can access estimated wait times for TSA screening throughout the day. Wait times will be broken down by lane type, differentiating between standard screening lines and TSA PreCheck lanes.

Broader Trend in Airline Technology

This initiative aligns with a broader industry trend of airlines providing real-time information to travelers as demand remains high and airports face operational pressures. Accurate wait time estimations are particularly valuable given the fluctuating nature of security lines.

Expanding App Capabilities

United has been proactively expanding its mobile app’s capabilities as part of a larger strategic initiative to move more of the travel experience onto digital platforms. This includes features like integrated baggage tracking using Apple AirTag technology, automated rebooking options, connection guidance, and real-time weather alerts.

The rollout of this feature demonstrates United Airlines’ commitment to addressing information gaps caused by operational challenges stemming from the DHS funding dispute. Providing passengers with tools to manage potential delays and navigate congestion is increasingly important in the competitive airline industry. United’s shares are up over 53% over the past year, despite a 17.5% dip year-to-date.
