The escalating conflict in Ukraine is fueling a rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by the Ukrainian military, according to Danylo Tsvok, head of the Defense Artificial Intelligence Center of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine.

These swarms aim to enhance operational efficiency and reduce the workload on human operators. Tsvok envisions a future dominated by autonomous systems, automating portions of the ‘kill chain’ and underpinning a fully networked battlefield.

He predicts this level of integration – smart weapons operating in coordination under a unified assessment platform – could be realized within three to five years. This would lead to front lines secured by tightly integrated hardware and software.

Current Deployments and Future Focus

In the immediate future, the focus is on deploying autonomous interceptors, expanding the use of ground-based robotic systems, and bolstering electronic warfare capabilities.

Recent reports indicate that land drones have already supported over 20,000 battlefield missions. These missions include vital tasks like medical evacuations, supply runs, and direct combat engagements, some completed without human soldier involvement.

Collaboration and Funding

Tsvok clarified that the objective isn’t the creation of fully autonomous ‘killer robots,’ but a more coordinated system that accelerates decision-making and fosters closer collaboration with Western partners.

Ukraine is actively seeking funding and partnerships with Western allies and Gulf states to scale production and integrate its AI capabilities into existing security alliances. The department currently receives financial support from the U.K. Ministry of Defence.

Tsvok deems this relationship both militarily and politically significant. He argues that democracies must prioritize the development of robust defensive capabilities, asserting that AI is essential for protecting peace globally.
