A significant increase in sales of traditional tumble dryers is occurring across the United Kingdom as consumers react to new regulations set to ban gas-fired, air-vented, and condenser models. This surge is driven by concerns over cost, practicality, and perceptions of government overreach.

New Regulations and the Shift to Heat Pump Dryers

The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has announced plans to phase out gas-fired, air-vented, and condenser dryers, leaving only efficient heat pump models available for purchase. This policy aligns the UK with existing European Union regulations implemented last year, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and promote energy efficiency as part of broader Net Zero objectives.

Retailers Report Increased Demand

Retailers nationwide are reporting a noticeable increase in sales of air-vented and condenser dryers as consumers anticipate the changes. This trend is particularly pronounced in Northern Ireland, which is already subject to EU regulations due to Brexit and experienced an earlier rush on these appliances.

Cost Concerns and Performance Limitations

The primary driver of this consumer behavior is the higher upfront cost of heat pump dryers. While DESNZ claims households could save up to £900 over the appliance’s lifetime due to lower running costs, independent investigations, such as one conducted by Which?, reveal that heat pump models can be up to £200 more expensive to purchase initially.

Several customers have also expressed concerns about the suitability of heat pump dryers for outbuildings or garages, as their efficiency can be compromised in colder temperatures. Many homes lack the indoor space to accommodate a heat pump dryer, making traditional vented options a more practical choice.

Industry Reactions and Customer Behavior

Luke Gammons, director of Wades hardware store, noted that customers are explicitly buying new air-vented dryers because they understand their future unavailability. Matt Oakes, head of sales at Appliance World Online, confirmed a “massive uptick” in sales of traditional dryers, emphasizing that customers are “paying close attention” to the upcoming changes.

Trevor Dalzell, managing director of Dalzells of Markethill, echoed this sentiment, recounting a similar surge in demand for cheaper condenser models last summer in anticipation of EU rule changes.

Political Debate and Concerns Over Government Overreach

The impending ban is sparking political debate, with critics arguing it represents an overreach of government control. Senior Tory MP Claire Coutinho frames the policy as part of a broader pattern of ‘Net Zero legislation’ that infringes on personal freedoms, extending to decisions about vehicles, home heating, and laundry appliances.
