The Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. lens uniquely blends vintage design with modern optics, providing photographers with a compact and durable solution.
Inspired by a Classic
Drawing inspiration from the 1950s Ilford Advocate camera, the Thypoch Eureka delivers sharp images with minimal aberrations. It is currently available in both Leica M and Fujifilm X mounts.
Design and Build Quality
Photographer Chris Niccolls highlights the lens’s rugged construction and substantial weight despite its small size. The Leica M-mount version is just 20 millimeters long and weighs less than 140 grams, featuring a lacquered solid brass barrel for a premium feel.
The Fujifilm X-mount version is slightly longer at 27 millimeters, but both versions maintain a compact profile and excellent optical performance.
Optical Performance
The lens incorporates seven glass elements in four groups, ensuring sharpness across the frame and minimizing aberrations. Its 28mm focal length (approximately 42mm equivalent on APS-C sensors) makes it versatile for street, landscape, lifestyle, and portrait photography.
The manual focus mechanism allows for close focusing down to 0.4 meters, with slight extension during focusing.
A Nod to the Past
The design echoes the Ilford Advocate camera, which featured a built-in Dallmeyer Anastigmat 35mm f/3.5 prime lens. The Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. closely resembles this vintage lens, merging retro charm with modern technology.
Availability and Pricing
The Thypoch Eureka 28mm f/2.8 ASPH. is offered in matte black or silver finishes. The silver version includes a lacquered white front ring, mirroring the original Ilford Advocate’s design.
Priced at $459, the lens is compatible with Leica M and Fujifilm X mounts. An M-to-X adapter is available for the M-mount version for an additional $20.
