Police in South Jersey were engaged in a series of incidents early Saturday morning involving stolen vehicles and subsequent high-speed pursuits. The events prompted a strong reminder from law enforcement for residents to prioritize vehicle security.

Initial Reports and First Pursuit

The first reports came in around 2:47 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, from the Buckingham Village development. Residents reported individuals attempting to enter parked cars. A patrol officer on Lestershire Drive encountered a Jeep Grand Cherokee with multiple individuals allegedly trying to open car doors.

When the suspects spotted the officer, they immediately fled in the Jeep, initiating a pursuit that continued through Willingboro and onto the northbound lanes of Route 55.

Multiple Vehicles Involved

Authorities discovered two additional stolen vehicles – a Kia and a Hyundai – which also evaded police and led to separate chases. These incidents highlight a recent increase in vehicle-related crimes in the area.

Dramatic Kia Chase and Crash

A pursuit involving a Mantua Township police sergeant led to a dramatic crash when the Kia sped onto Mercer Avenue, crossed railroad tracks, and traveled approximately 150 feet before overturning at the end of West Mercer Avenue. The vehicle sustained significant damage.

Local resident Susan Hurff reported being awakened by a loud bang and flashes of light, expressing immediate concern for the vehicle’s occupants. Sergeant William Donovan of the Mantua Township Police Department stated the suspects were traveling over 75 miles per hour and the vehicle became airborne before hitting electrical wires.

Suspect Injured, Investigation Ongoing

A young suspect was found injured near West Atlantic Avenue and Grey Fox Circle and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment. The incident caused disruption to the local community as first responders secured the scene and provided aid.
