Samsung has unveiled its latest premium foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, aimed at power users and photography enthusiasts. The devce introduces a titanium-reinforced structure and significant hardware upgrades while maintaining the form factor of the previous generation.
The 3,000-nit display and 5,000mAh battery boost
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra introduces several internal upgrades that aim to improve daily usability. According to the report, the 6.5-inch cover display now reaches a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, making it much more legible in direct sunlight. The inner flexible screen also sees a resolution increase to 2,256 x 2,504, providing a sharper canvas for multitasking. This visual overhaul is complemented by a new color palette, including dark grey, cream, purple, and green.
Power management has also seen a notable shift. Samsung has increased the battery capacity to 5,000mAh, up from the 4,400mAh found in the Z Fold 7. This larger cell, paired with 45W wired charging and 20W wireless charging, is intended to ensue the device lasts a full day even under heavy workloads.
A 200-megapixel sensor and titanium-alloy construction
Samsung is leaning heavily into the "Ultra" branding by significantly upgrading the imaging hardware. While the standard Fold 8 utilizes a 50-megapixel ultrawide, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra features a massive 200-megapixel main sensor designed for superior low-light performance. A 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom adds a layer of versatility that distinguishes this model from its more affordable sibling.
To address one of the most common complaints regarding foldables, Samsung has implemented a new titanium-alloy film and a flexible titanium plate. This structural change is designed to make the screen crease less visible and increase the overall durability of the device. Remarkably, these upgrades allow the phone to remain within the same size and weight envelope as the Z Fold 7, with the device measuring only 4.1mm thick when opened.
Defending market share against a rumored Apple foldable
The launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra comes at a time of increasing tension in the premium mobile market. As the report notes, Apple is rumored to be developing its own foldable iPhone, which could pose a significant threat to Samsung’s current dominance in the category.
By focusing on massive screen real estate and high-end photography, Samsung is attempting to lock in power users before Apple can make its move. The strategy relies on offering a level of hardware sophistication—specifically in the camera and display departments—that justifies the premium price tag in a crowded field of rival brands.
The trade-off of IP48 ratings and missing S-Pen support
Despite the hardware improvements, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra makes some controversial concessions. Most notably, the device has moved to an IP48 rating, which provides water protection but offers less dust resistance than the IP68 rating seen in previous models. This reduction in environmental protection could be a significant drawback for users in harsher climates.
Furthermore, the decision to omit S-Pen support represents a notable departure from the productivity-focused identity of the Fold series. It remains unclear whether Samsung is intentionally pivoting away from stylus users or if the new titaanium design simply left no room for the necessary components.. This omission, combined with the lower dust resistance, leaves some questions about whether the "Ultra" moniker truly represents the pinnacle of the series or if the improvements are merely incremental.
