Roblox is introducing significant updates to its platform, including new age-based accounts and advanced safety features like facial age verification. These measures are designed to better protect younger players and provide parents with more robust control over their children's online experiences.
New Age-Based Account System
The platform is rolling out a new system that categorizes users into distinct age groups. Starting in early June, children aged 5 to 8 will automatically be placed into a 'Roblox Kids' account. Those aged 9 to 15 will be assigned to a 'Roblox Select' account. These designations come with specific limitations to mitigate potential risks for younger users.
Restrictions for Youngest Users
Players in the 'Roblox Kids' category will have no access to the chat function. They will also be restricted to playing games rated 'Minimal or Mild' for content. This ensures a highly controlled environment for the youngest demographic on the platform.
Adjustments for Older Children
Users aged 9 and older in the 'Roblox Select' category will have limited chat capabilities. Their game access will be confined to titles with content maturity ratings up to 'Moderate'. These adjustments aim to balance engagement with age-appropriate safety standards.
Enhanced Verification and Parental Controls
The transition to these new account types will be automatic as users reach the age of 9. Both account types can undergo verification through the age check system or parental approval. Without verification, all users will be limited to 'Minimal or Mild' rated games and will have all communication features disabled.
Facial Age Estimation Technology
Roblox is also enhancing its existing age verification by requiring a facial scan for access to online chat features. This technology helps the platform accurately assign users to age-appropriate settings, including communication restrictions. This builds upon measures introduced earlier this year.
Empowering Parents
Parents will gain increased control over their children's in-game activities. New features will allow parents to block specific games and manage their child's direct chat settings. This empowers parents to tailor their child's online experience for greater security.
Addressing Safety Concerns
These updates come as Roblox faces ongoing scrutiny and legal challenges regarding child safety on its platform. The company has been accused of maintaining an unsupervised environment that could expose minors to risks. Roblox states its commitment to safety and highlights existing measures, such as the inability to share or receive images in chat, to limit potential dangers.
Roblox, founded in 2006, currently boasts an average of 144.5 million daily active users and has seen over 35 billion hours of engagement. The platform aims to balance its massive user base with the critical need for a secure environment for all players, especially its younger audience.
