A New Era in Sustainable Yachting
A new era of sustainable yachting is on the horizon with the imminent launch of Project Oceanus, a 145-foot sailing yacht that will operate entirely on renewable energy.
Designed by Vripack in collaboration with Dykstra Naval Architects, the vessel will have no traditional engine onboard, instead harnessing wind, solar, and hydrogeneration to achieve up to two weeks of autonomous cruising with virtually unlimited range.
The $30 Million Energy Harvesting System
The yacht's propulsion relies heavily on hydrogeneration via uniquely designed turbine propellers, which generate up to 200 kW of electrical power when wind conditions are favorable.
The displacement hull, developed with input from Emirates Team New Zealand's America's Cup team, is optimized for both speed and energy capture, offering a 2.5 percent increase in speed and an 8 percent boost in electric power generation compared to conventional designs.
The yacht is fitted with 1,076 square feet of high-efficiency solar panels that power onboard systems and climate control, with all this energy stored in a five megawatt-hour battery system weighing 44 tons.
A Bespoke Luxury Experience
Despite the cutting-edge technology, the owner insisted on the classic feel of a traditional sailing yacht, with a sleek blue aluminum hull topped with a low superstructure made of Brazilian teak and twin towering masts.
Every detail is bespoke, from a hand-painted metal transom that mimics wood to a passerelle that doubles as a private swim ladder.
The interior is inspired by nature, with smoked European oak, 'leathered' stone, and custom furniture crafted from reclaimed bark.
Private Cruising and Scientific Research
Project Oceanus is set for delivery later this year and will be used for private crising and select charters, but also has a scientific mission: to facilitate research on renewable marine technologies and ocean sustainability.
The yacht represents a bold step toward zero-emission luxury travel, proving that opulence and environmental responsibility can coexist on the high seas .
With its cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly design, Project Oceanus is poised to set a new standard for sustainable yachting.
