Amidst increasing expenses and a more complex viewing landscape, lawmakers are requesting the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to investigate the impact of sports streaming on consumers.
The Shift to Streaming & Rising Costs
The way fans watch live sports has dramatically changed with the rise of streaming services. This transition, however, has created new challenges, making access to games more expensive and complicated. Viewers now often navigate a multitude of streaming platforms to find the games they want.
The simplicity of traditional broadcast television, where games were readily available, has been replaced by a system of multiple subscriptions. Platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Peacock, Apple TV+, ESPN+, and Hulu now broadcast various sports, including NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, and NHL. While this expands content options, it also creates a costly and complex experience for fans.
Lawmaker Intervention & FCC Response
Responding to consumer frustration, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Patrick Ryan have urged the FCC to intervene. They want the FCC to use its authority to protect the public interest and examine the trends contributing to the current state of sports streaming.
Concerns About Anti-Competitive Practices
The lawmakers expressed concerns about potential anti-competitive practices, citing examples like Fubo’s merger with Disney (ESPN’s parent company) and “forced bundling.” Forced bundling requires consumers to pay for channels or platforms they don’t want to access desired games.
In March, the FCC responded by requesting public comment, seeking proposals to address issues related to live sports television access. The commission acknowledged the ease of watching games on free, over-the-air broadcasts in the past but noted the increasing trend of games moving behind streaming paywalls.
Balancing Access and Affordability
The lawmakers emphasized the financial strain on sports fans and warned that mergers could exacerbate these challenges. They stressed the need for the FCC to actively review industry transactions to foster competition and protect consumer interests.
The core issue is balancing the expanded options offered by streaming with the affordability and accessibility of broadcast television. This requires a re-evaluation of sports content delivery and a careful consideration of the economic impact on fans.
