Blackmagic Design has launched DaVinci Resolve 21, a significant update to its professional editing software. This release introduces a new Photo page, enabling users to edit still images within the platform, alongside a suite of AI-powered features designed to enhance video editing workflows.
New Photo Editing Capabilities
The groundbreaking Photo page allows colorists and photographers to edit still images using Resolve's powerful post-production tools. Users can now apply intricate color grades and node-based adjustments to photos, leveraging features previously exclusive to video editing.
The software supports non-destructive editing, preserving original file quality. It also offers direct support for RAW file formats and the application of Resolve FX and Open FX plug-ins to still images. LUT support, common in video, is now also extended to photos.
Enhanced Organization and Workflow
DaVinci Resolve 21 features a LightBox view for organizing photo albums, with filters for edit status, star ratings, and flags. Users can create custom albums based on shoot days or camera models and import Lightroom catalogs.
The platform now supports direct tethering with Sony and Canon cameras, allowing live image capture and control over settings like ISO, exposure, and white balance. The Photo page integrates seamlessly with Blackmagic Cloud for multi-user collaboration.
AI-Powered Video Editing Enhancements
DaVinci Resolve 21 incorporates several new AI-driven tools. IntelliSearch analyzes media to quickly find specific objects, keywords, or people within video clips and dialogue.
AI CineFocus allows users to select an area to focus on and simulate depth-of-field effects, including rack focus simulations with keyframing. The AI UltraSharpen feature can upscale low-resolution content, including both videos and photos, and also correct minor focus errors.
Advanced AI Tools for Creative Control
The update includes AI tools like Face Age Transformer and Face Reshaper for altering perceived age or facial features in clips. AI Blemish Removal offers a natural-looking way to reduce skin imperfections.
AI Motion Deblur is introduced to eliminate motion blur artifacts, improving clarity in footage. These AI features aim to streamline complex editing tasks and offer new creative possibilities.
Availability and Pricing
DaVinci Resolve 21 will be available in a free version, with the fully-featured professional version priced at $295. This update expands the software's utility for both photographers and videographers, offering a unified workflow for diverse media projects.
