Tina Charles, a monumental figure in women’s basketball, announced her retirement from the WNBA on Tuesday after a distinguished 15-year career. She is the league’s all-time leading rebounder with an impressive 4,262 rebounds and ranks second in all-time scoring with 8,396 points, trailing only Diana Taurasi.
Early Success and Collegiate Achievements
Charles’s journey began as the No. 1 overall pick by the Connecticut Sun in 2010. This followed a stellar collegiate career at the University of Connecticut, where she secured back-to-back NCAA championships in 2009 and 2010. She also earned AP Player of the Year honors in her final year with the Huskies.
A Journey Through Multiple Teams
Throughout her career, Charles showcased her versatility and impact, playing for multiple teams including the Sun, Liberty, Mystics, Mercury, Storm, and Dream, before returning to Connecticut for her final season. Providing Life-Saving Equipment
Hopey’s Heart Foundation provides automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to schools and public places. Inspired by personal tragedy, Charles committed herself to raising awareness and ensuring access to life-saving equipment. To date, the foundation has donated 500 AEDs.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert lauded Charles as a true embodiment of the league’s values, highlighting her leadership and dedication to giving back.
