West Virginia University's basketball program has bolstered its roster with the addition of Marya Hudgins, a transfer guard from Brigham Young University (BYU). Hudgins, a 6’0” player, brings considerable experience and a proven scoring ability to Morgantown.
Hudgins' Collegiate Career
Early Years at Santa Clara
Hudgins began her collegiate career at Santa Clara University, where she played for two seasons. During her time there, she averaged 7.6 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, while maintaining shooting percentages of 39% from the field and 33% from three-point range. She faced a challenge during this period, battling a stress fracture in her fibula.
Time at BYU
Her journey continued at BYU, where she played for two seasons. The 2024-25 season was cut short by a knee injury, limiting her to just seven games. However, she rebounded strongly in the following season.
Standout Performances
In 27 games during her second season at BYU, Hudgins averaged 9.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game. She shot 39% from the field and an impressive 36.7% from beyond the arc. A notable performance came against No. 17 Vanderbilt, where she scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, shooting 10-for-14 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point range.
Impact on West Virginia
Familiarity with the Program
Hudgins is already familiar with the West Virginia program, having scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds against the Mountaineers while playing for BYU this season. This performance caught the attention of West Virginia head coach Mark Kellogg.
Versatility and Potential
While not primarily known for her defense, Hudgins’ ability to guard multiple positions aligns with Coach Kellogg’s defensive strategies. She is expected to contribute at both the two and three positions. Her ball-handling skills are solid, though she is not anticipated to play point guard.
Areas for Improvement
Hudgins averaged two turnovers per game last season and will focus on improving her ball security. Reducing unforced errors, such as games with six and eight turnovers, will be key to her success at West Virginia.
With the addition of Hudgins, West Virginia continues to build a competitive team under Coach Kellogg’s leadership. Her experience, scoring ability, and versatility will be valuable assets for the upcoming season.
