The Toronto Tempo are poised to make history as the WNBA’s first Canadian team, preparing for their inaugural season with a pre-season game against the Connecticut Sun.
A Historic Debut
Tonight marks a significant milestone for the WNBA as the Toronto Tempo host the Connecticut Sun at the Coca-Cola Coliseum. This pre-season contest offers fans their first glimpse of the league’s inaugural Canadian team in action.
The team’s formation, following the expansion draft earlier this month, represents a new era for the WNBA and expands its reach into a dedicated Canadian fanbase.
Building a Foundation
The Tempo will compete in the seven-team Eastern Conference, facing a challenging schedule designed to test their developing talent. Seasoned coach Sandy Brondello will lead the team, utilizing her experience and strategic acumen.
Roster Development
Currently, the Tempo are holding a training camp with 19 players. The coaching staff is working to narrow down the roster to the final 12 players for the regular season.
This selection process focuses on building a cohesive unit and establishing a clear team identity.
Looking Ahead
The team will launch its 22-game home schedule on May 8th against the Washington Mystics. Their final pre-season game will be against the Minnesota Lynx on Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Beyond on-court performance, the Tempo are focused on inspiring the next generation of Canadian athletes and promoting the growth of basketball nationwide. Kia Nurse, a Hamilton, Ontario native and seven-year WNBA veteran, is the team’s first Canadian player.
Kia Nurse expressed the team’s enthusiasm, stating they are eager to “make more hoop history in Canada.”
The Toronto Tempo are determined to thrive, becoming a force in the WNBA and a source of pride for basketball fans across Canada.
