Toronto Tempo Launch Event Highlights Roster Additions
Toronto’s WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo, continues to build its roster ahead of its inaugural season. The team announced the signing of Kia Nurse, the first Canadian player to join the franchise. Nurse stated, “What’s up, Tempo fans? Kia Nurse here. And man, I am so excited to finally be able to play on home soil and play for Canada's first ever WNBA team. Little me in Hamilton, 20 years ago, this would have been my wildest dreams.”
The 30-year-old Nurse has 245 career WNBA games under her belt, most recently playing the 2025 season with the Chicago Sky. She has also represented Canada at three Olympic Games and multiple world championships. The Tempo’s home opener is scheduled for May 8th against the Washington Mystics at the Coca-Cola Coliseum, located just outside downtown Toronto.
At an event called “Before the Bounce,” approximately 8,000 fans were given a preview of the game-day experience, including access to the team shop and concession stands. The event culminated in the unveiling of the Toronto Tempo court, featuring the team’s purple and blue colors. The team’s dance team, introduced as the “rhythm section,” also performed. Team officials, including the head coach, team president, and general manager, addressed the crowd.
One fan expressed their excitement, stating, “Been long overdue for a women's basketball team and just excited to cheer them on and see them grow from the ground up.” Another fan said, “I'm really excited that we finally are getting more representation of women's sports in Canada. It's something that they get to see, like the actual product. It's no longer just a dream.” Fans were observed interacting with head coach Sandy Brondello, requesting photos.
In addition to signing Kia Nurse, the Tempo also drafted Kiki Rice from UCLA with the sixth overall pick. Rice is fresh off a national title win in the NCAA, contributing 15.6 boards and four assists for the Bruins. WNBA writer Chelsea Leighton described Rice as someone who will “kind of be someone who comes off the bench and is really soaking up everything” and noted that Nurse’s experience as a “three and D player” will be valuable mentorship for Rice.
Notable attendees at the launch event included Masai Ujiri, a member of the Toronto Tempo ownership group, and Nav Bhatia, a longtime Toronto Raptors super fan who has secured season tickets to Tempo games. Bhatia will be in attendance for the team’s first regular season game on May 8th against the Washington Mystics.

Hobbins is also a local artist whose painting was featured during a podcast with the Kelsey brothers and Brady Tkachuk.
Hobbins is known for his elaborate game-day outfits and has become a “jumbotron legend” within the Senators fanbase. He and his family create themed costumes, including outfits inspired by Jake the Snake Roberts and the Minions. He also created leader hoses for Tim Stutzle. He stated, “We just want to create as much buzz and much fandom should we say as possible everybody needs to be up and loud and cheering.”
Hobbins and his family have secured six seats for the playoffs and plan to attend as many games as possible, continuing to create and wear customized outfits. He currently owns approximately 54 suits for various occasions. He expressed his enthusiasm for the team’s playoff run, stating, “We’re in for everything. We hope we have a long run and we will continue to roll out the outfits and we want to get as creative and crazy as possible.”
