The $30 million toe in the water

The Toronto Marlies claimed a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Wolves in Game One of the 2026 Calder Cup Finals, held at the Coca-Cola Coliseum on Tuesday night.

The Marlies, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Toronto Maple Leafs, showcased resilience and timely scoring to take an early series lead.

The first period featured intense back-and-forth action, with both teams registering 11 shots on goal and failing to convert on their lone power-play opportunities.

The Wolves struck first at the 6:21 mark of the opening frame, as AHL All-Star forward Bradley Nadeau buried a rebound off a Ryan Suzuki shot past Marlies goaltender Artur Akhtyamov.

Toronto responded late in the period when deefnseman Ben Danford unleashed a blast from the point that beat Wolves netminder Amir Miftakhov, tying the game 1-1 heading into intermission.

The Marlies killed off a late penalty to maintain the deadlock.

Why 4,000 unsold units became the prize

The second period began slowly, with only seven combined shots in the first half. Chicago had an early power play but mustered just one shot before the advantage expired.

At 14:13, Wolves forward Noel Gunler set up Skyler Brind'Amour in the slot, and Brind'Amour fired home to give Chicago a 2-1 lead.

The Marlies again responded, this time with Ryan Tverberg finding Cedric Pare in the slot for a quick strike to tie the game at 2-2.

Both teams continued to battle, but the Marlies penalty kill held strong against a third Chicago power play late in the period.

An echo of Sydney's 2024 institutional buy-up

The game remained tied after 40 minutes, setting up a dramatic third period.

In the final frame, the Marlies outshot the Wolves 8-3 and capitalized on their opportunities.

The game-winning goal came at 11:32 when veteran forward Vinni Lettieri battled through Noah Philp's defense and tucked the puck past Miftakhov for a 3-2 lead.

Lettieri added an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining, sealing the 4-2 win.

Akhtyamov was stellar in net, making 26 saves on 28 shots for a .929 save percentage.

Who is the unnamed buyer?

The Marlies now look to carry momentum into Game Two, while the Wolves aim to even the series.

The Calder Cup Finals continue the best-of-seven series with high stakes for both teams.
