The San Diego Padres are preparing to reinstate left-handed pitcher Yuki Matsui from the injured list on Tuesday, as announced by manager Craig Stammen. This activation will necessitate a corresponding roster move.
Matsui's Recovery and Contract
Matsui has been recovering from a left groin strain sustained during spring training. He signed a five-year, $28 million contract with the Padres before the 2024 season, bringing a decade of experience from Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan.
2024 Performance and Rehabilitation
In 64 relief appearances in 2024, Matsui posted a 3.73 earned run average (ERA) with 69 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched. He followed that with 61 games in 2024, finishing with a 3.98 ERA and 61 strikeouts over 63.1 innings. He also earned his first career save in Major League Baseball.
During his rehabilitation, Matsui made 11 appearances in Triple-A, allowing seven runs over 12.2 innings for a 4.97 ERA. Despite this, he recorded 14 strikeouts to only three walks.
Roster Move Considerations
The Padres must decide whether to send a player to the minor leagues or place someone on the injured list to make room for Matsui. Due to his service time, Matsui could not be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent.
Potential Candidates for Demotion
Left-handed pitcher Kyle Hart and right-handed pitcher Bradgley Rodriguez are the most likely candidates for demotion, as both have the option of being sent to the minor leagues without waivers. Hart, 33, has pitched 16.1 innings this season with a 5.51 ERA.
The team will carefully evaluate each player's contributions before making a final decision. This highlights the competitive nature of the Padres’ bullpen and the challenges of roster management.
