Orlando City made Major League Soccer (MLS) history by completing a stunning 4-3 comeback victory over Inter Miami, erasing a 3-0 deficit. The match featured a hat-trick from Martin Ojeda and a stoppage-time winner from Tyrese Spicer.
Dramatic Turnaround at Inter Miami’s Stadium
Lionel Messi scored a goal and provided two assists, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Inter Miami from suffering their first loss at their new stadium. They currently hold a record of 0-1-3 at home, placing them among the few MLS teams still searching for a home win this season.
Ojeda Leads the Charge
Inter Miami initially appeared to be in control with a commanding 3-0 lead. However, Orlando City dramatically shifted the momentum. Argentine forward Martin Ojeda ignited the comeback, scoring in the 39th minute to make it 3-1 before halftime.
Ojeda continued his impressive performance, scoring again in the 68th minute to further narrow the gap. He then converted a penalty in the 78th minute to equalize the score at 3-3.
Stoppage-Time Winner Seals Historic Victory
Despite several crucial saves by Inter Miami goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, including one with his face, Orlando City pressed forward. Tyrese Spicer ultimately secured the victory with a goal in the third minute of stoppage time, finalizing the 4-3 scoreline.
This comeback marked only the third instance in MLS history where a team has overcome a 3-0 deficit to win a match. The MLS website questioned if it was “The greatest comeback in MLS HISTORY?”
Messi’s Reaction and Other MLS Results
Following the defeat, Lionel Messi reportedly addressed the team in the locker room, deeming the result “unacceptable.” Inter Miami defender Ian Fray confirmed the team’s agreement with Messi’s assessment.
Orlando City, with a record of 3-7-1, had previously struggled, winning only two of their last 15 MLS matches.
