Mississippi State softball is preparing for a challenging series against No. 20 LSU during Super Bulldog Weekend, continuing a demanding stretch of games against highly ranked teams.
A Grueling Schedule for the Bulldogs
The Bulldogs are seeking a series win to boost their Southeastern Conference standing and celebrate their seniors. Mississippi State is currently navigating one of the nation’s most difficult schedules, having played seven consecutive SEC series against ranked opponents.
Six of those series featured teams ranked within the top 15 in at least one poll – a level of competition unmatched by any other team in the conference. Despite this rigorous schedule, Mississippi State has only secured one series win during this period.
LSU Enters the Series in Strong Form
LSU arrives in Starkville having recently swept Ole Miss and winning nine of their last eleven games. Pitcher Paytn Monticelli was pivotal in the sweep, earning all three victories without allowing a run.
The Tigers lead the SEC in triples and excel in base running, double plays, and utilizing a fast-paced offensive lineup. Their current SEC record is 9-9, and they are considered to be playing their best softball of the season.
Senior Weekend Celebrations
This weekend also marks Senior Weekend for Mississippi State, with events planned to honor the team’s graduating players. Several Bulldogs are poised to leave a lasting legacy on the program.
Nadia Barbary is among the program’s all-time leaders in home runs, doubles, and total bases. Kiarra Sells ranks highly in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, and OPS, currently maintaining a 17-game streak of reaching base.
Delainey Everett has returned to full health and has not allowed a run in her 8.2 innings pitched since her return. Freshman Kinley Keller consistently contributes offensively, and Xiane Romero recently hit a grand slam against Texas A&M.
Defensive Strength and a Crucial Juncture
Mississippi State’s defense has been a consistent strength, boasting a .983 fielding percentage – sixth best nationally and on pace to break the school record. Despite strong defense, the team has struggled to overcome the challenges presented by their difficult schedule.
The series against LSU represents a crucial point in the season, offering an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and potential against a top SEC team. A series win would provide a fitting send-off for the seniors and build momentum heading into their final regular-season series at Ole Miss.
