The Toronto Maple Leafs have announced a significant overhaul of their hockey operations, appointing Mats Sundin as senior executive advisor and John Chayka as the 19th general manager in franchise history.

New Leadership Era Begins

These moves follow the dismissal of Brad Treliving on March 30th, marking a pivotal moment for the organization. MLSE President & CEO Keith Pelley expressed his confidence in the appointments, emphasizing the extensive hockey knowledge both Sundin and Chayka bring to the team.

Commitment to Contending

Pelley underscored the organization’s dedication to building a championship-caliber team for the fans and the city. He believes these hires are a crucial step towards achieving that goal, favoring a “retool” over a complete rebuild.

Mats Sundin Returns to Toronto

The return of Mats Sundin is particularly noteworthy, given his legendary career with the Maple Leafs. He played 13 seasons in Toronto, becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer with 987 points.

A Legacy of Leadership

Sundin captained the team for 11 years, leading them to eight playoff appearances and two Eastern Conference Finals. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the team’s success, having previously been recognized with the Mark Messier Leadership Award in 2008.

Beyond the NHL, Sundin captained Sweden to Olympic gold in 2006 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. He was also named one of the NHL’s top 100 players in 2017.

John Chayka Brings Analytical Approach

John Chayka’s appointment as GM introduces a different skillset. He previously served as GM for the Arizona Coyotes for four seasons, achieving a record of 131-147-38 before resigning in 2020.

Past Controversy and Expertise

Chayka’s departure from Arizona was accompanied by controversy, resulting in a suspension from the NHL. However, he also co-founded the Stathletes analytics firm, a pioneer in modern hockey analytics.

Chayka expressed his excitement about joining the Maple Leafs, stating his commitment to building a competitive and relentless team. The Maple Leafs finished the last season with a 32-36-14 record and will participate in the NHL draft lottery on May 5th.
