LIV Golf’s inaugural New Orleans tournament, originally scheduled for late June, is expected to be postponed until the fall. This decision stems from concerns regarding extreme summer heat, course conditions, and potential conflicts with the World Cup.
Tournament Delay and Schedule Gap
The postponement will create a three-month gap in LIV Golf’s U.S. schedule. There will be no tournaments held between the May 7-10 event at Trump National in northern Virginia and the August 6-9 tournament at Trump Bedminster in New Jersey.
Concerns Over Financial Stability
This development occurs just two weeks after LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil reassured staff and players that the season would proceed without interruption. Despite this reassurance, speculation persists regarding the potential withdrawal of financial support from the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia.
Financial Investment and Refunds
Since its launch in 2022, LIV Golf has reportedly spent over $5 billion, prompting questions about its long-term sustainability. Louisiana officials initially committed $5 million to LIV Golf and an additional $2.2 million for course improvements at Bayou Oaks when the tournament was announced last August.
However, WDSU reported that the state will receive a $1 million refund, as this amount had already been paid in advance.
Strategic Repositioning
The delay is presented as a strategic move to optimize playing conditions, attendance, and viewership. It also underscores the ongoing financial and logistical challenges faced by the controversial league.
The tournament was originally scheduled for June 25-28 at Bayou Oaks at City Park. Reports from local news outlets, including WDSU and Nola.com, first confirmed the delay on Monday.
